Arthur Newth Morris, III, a third generation folding carton manufacturer, passed away suddenly on April 27 at the age of 67. In 1936, his grandfather Arthur Newth Morris founded what is now RockTenn Company. His father, Arthur Newth Morris, Jr., founded Dixie Packaging Company in Glen Burnie, Maryland. On his father’s retirement in 1988, Morris became owner and CEO. Under his leadership he brought in offset printing, improved efficiencies, and was one of the first to install a laser in the diemaking operation. He sold the company in 2011 to Kollman Label and Packaging Group (now Prime Packaging) and retired in 2016.
Morris was a long-time member of the Paperboard Packaging Council (PPC). PPC members were fortunate to see him and his wife, Alice, just three weeks earlier on the boat trip in Baltimore at the Spring Meeting. He was both a past chair of PPC and a recipient of the Robert T. Gair Award for lifetime achievement.
PPC Chair Katherine Roehlke, a longtime friend of Morris, said, “We are deeply saddened by the loss of our dear friend, colleague, and mentor. Newth’s enthusiasm for our industry and the Paperboard Packaging Council was contagious. We were fortunate that he recently joined us at PPC’s Spring Meeting on April 11th. We will forever cherish the time that we spent together and the many contributions that he made to PPC.”
