MM Kotkamills open sheeting centre

MM Kotkamills has invested more than €30m to build a new Sheeting Centre with two state-of-the-art sheet cutters and related automation.

This investment for the further processing of cartonboard will strengthen MM Kotkamills’ position as a supplier of cartonboard sheets in the European market.

MM Kotkamills has established and will maintain partnerships with external sheeting centres to provide its customers with high-quality cartonboard sheets. The mill’s own Sheeting Centre was built to meet the increasing demand for cartonboard sheets in addition to the external cooperation.

The official opening ceremony of the Centre took place on 27 August 2024, and was attended by people involved in the construction project from the City of Kotka, partners and MM Kotkamills.

“The City of Kotka is delighted with this significant investment by the Austrian MM Group in a board and paper mill in our city. The city was once built around this mill, and the mill has been a driving force for more than 150 years in the transformation of the region into a vibrant neighbourhood. It is good that this is still the case today. The new investment in the Sheeting Centre will strengthen our region and bring opportunities and confidence to other players”, says Esa Sirviö, Mayor of Kotka.

“Our new Sheeting Centre and its modern technology will enable automated processing of cartonboard reels from production to sheeting. We will be able to serve our customers faster and ensure even better quality of the cartonboard as the sheeting will take directly after production and there will be no need to transport the reels outside the mill for sheeting”, says Niilo Pöyhönen, Chairman of the Board of MM Kotkamills, who has been actively involved in the Sheeting Centre project.

“Now the cartonboard broke from the sheeting process can also be easily recycled back into the cartonboard production, which supports our mill integrate’s core mission to promote the circular economy by using production side streams and making the most efficient use of fibres as our raw material,” continues Päivi Suutari, Managing Director, MM Kotkamills.
