Innovative packaging to prevent egg breakages in Recipe boxes

UK-based Weedon PSC has developed innovative new packaging to protect single eggs packed in recipe boxes – and done it in record-breaking time to meet the customer’s advertised launch date.

The packaging has been developed for the health-focused food box company, Mindful Chef, which distributes thousands of recipe boxes around the UK every week containing eggs. Mindful Chef was experiencing breakages using plastic containers and needed packaging that would guarantee the eggs would arrive undamaged. The company also wanted to switch to recyclable, sustainable packaging instead of plastic, in line with its health-conscious ethos.

Weedon PSC’s egg box relies on clever structural design. One-piece packaging made from corrugated board holds each individual egg in its own cushioned box to protect it during transportation. The design makes for quick assembly and, because eggs do not come in identical shapes and sizes, provides flexible cushioning for a secure fit.

Weedon PSC received the enquiry from Mindful Chef on a Thursday. By Tuesday the following week the new packaging had been designed and a trial production run of the first 5000 individual egg boxes had been manufactured and delivered. The customer feedback has been positive and so far the trial has proved 100% successful – not a single egg has been reported as having arrived broken.

David Waller, Buying Manager of Mindful Chef, commented, “The turnaround time was amazing and we’re grateful to the Weedon PSC team in pulling off the impossible. We also really appreciated them going to our recipe box packers and running through how the pack is made up – great customer service and a big thumbs up from us.”
