Mitchel Lincoln, the Montreal based corrugated packaging company founded in 1965 has recently completed a successful installation of a state-of-the-art TCY N11 Jumbo casemaker, building on one of the company’s core values to continuously reinvest in cutting-edge technologies.
Emmanuel Eydan, Industrial Director, Mitchel Lincoln, says, “We needed to add a machine with the latest technology and capabilities so we could improve our efficiency and productive output at our Jumbo plant to serve our growing heavy duty box customers. Mitchel Lincoln is part of the Atlantic Packaging Group and has been running a TCY Jumbo FFG extremely reliably for over 20 years at a sister manufacturing facility. Therefore, we have an already well-proven supplier in TCY and so we took the decision to travel to the UK and evaluate a new N11 89″ x 205″ FFG for our plant.”
Technical Specs Were Key
Once the machine performance had been demonstrated, the technical team at Mitchel Lincoln worked with TCY to study the technical specifications and details to ensure that the N11 jumbo could meet the needs of converting extremely heavy-duty AAC and AAA 1100lb sheet all in one converting line, as well as creating bespoke layouts to fit into the pre-determined floorspace.
Eydan notes, “It was critical that the machine could run these heavy board grades for our Agricultural, Food & Beverage and industrial packaging customers and I was particularly impressed by the sturdy construction of the folder gluer section and the engineering principles applied to the main press section that we knew would provide stable and accurate production performance. The option of inline stitching would significantly reduce material handling and so we selected a TCY N11 86″ x 205″ two-color jumbo casemaker with rotary die cutter, inline stitching unit and counter down stacker. We also added a Jumbo pre-feeder and tied the whole line into our plant conveyor lines.”
This complete all-in-one casemaker is equipped with TCY Smart Tech full computer system, where the orders need only be programmed once to the memory, and then the next time that the order is recalled the N11 will automatically and accurately set the axis positions from the last production run allowing for faster operator setups. The system also has pin-point error reporting and scheduled maintenance alerts that can be controlled by maintenance supervisors as well as remote diagnostic support capabilities.
Tight on Space!
Eydan continues, “The installation was spatially challenging in terms of working around the other production lines but by working together and understanding the detail of what was required, the installation and commissioning was successfully completed in early 2024.”
On a typical TCY installation, once the crew are trained and the machine is production ready, TCY opens a dedicated 24hr service support group, usually via digital information exchanges, so supervisors have direct access to a technical team based in Taiwan to answer all issues that come up, in real-time.
Crucially, this is then followed up with planned return site visits by our tech team to offer re-training, machine calibration where necessary and training of new crew. TCY also take a deeper dive into the machine operation detail to improve operator knowledge and skill.
“This is part of the TCY value that we can offer our customers,” says Rob Garvey, Sales Manger, TCY North America. “We are committed to providing our customers with first-class machinery and services and have achieved this by expanding our production facilities in Taiwan with a dedicated manufacturing plant specifically for jumbo machine production. This more efficient approach increases the speed of production, so TCY can shorten the lead time to meet the immediate needs of customers, making our Jumbo delivery times more competitive.”
He continues, “In addition to the headquarters in Taiwan, we have set up warehouses & offices in Europe and in Chino, California. We also have a 24hr parts and service hotline, have remote machine diagnostics, and can deploy factory trained field service technicians depending on the needs of the customer.”
Garvey concludes, “We’re excited to welcome guests to our booth#1301 at SuperCorr 2024, where we will be showcasing a four-color QS1227 FFG as well as static displays of our Jumbo press units and you can see for yourself the build-quality, speed and performance of a TCY machine.”
