Crossroads Paper plans to construct a recycled paper mill in Utah. A formal announcement was made at a press conference on July 10 in Salt Lake City by Crossroads Paper CEO John Sasine. The Project Developer is Ron Sasine, former Senior Director of Private Brands Packaging at WalMart, and Principal at Hudson Windsor, a retail packaging consultancy.
The 80-acre plant at a yet to be selected site in the Salt Lake Valley is expected to produce 1,000 tons per day of recycled containerboard. Construction is expected to begin in the next few months and start-up is anticipated in early 2022.
The total cost of the project is anticipated to be $320 million and will be financed by private investment capital, according the company. The local intermountain west market will supply the bulk of the recycled paper and corrugated to supply the facility. “Currently, U.S. paper production is concentrated in the Southeast, Upper-Midwest, and Pacific Northwest,” the company reports on its web site. “Utah has a robust and efficient collection infrastructure for recyclables, but recyclables must be shipped out of the region for processing and then shipped back in for production of new corrugated boxes.”
Once completed, it will be the only operating paper mill in the state.
