Denmaur has reached the 200,000 tonnes milestone of Carbon Balanced Paper sales since the UK national paper and board merchant adopted the scheme into their comprehensive carbon policy in 2016.
Carbon Balanced Paper is a simple solution for organisations to offset the emissions of the paper in their media communications. It has become one of the best-known carbon programmes in the industry, supporting the activities of the World Land Trust (WLT) – protecting, conserving, and regenerating some of the planet’s most important forests and biodiversity, as well as protecting the habitats of a number of critically endangered species.
Danny Doogan, Marketing and Sustainability Director, commented, “Carbon Balanced Paper already had some traction within paper and print when we adopted it in 2016. Its projects are based on the REDD+ framework which was an obvious fit for us, bearing in mind the product we sell. Moreover, their list of notable patrons includes Sir David Attenborough, so we knew partnering with the WLT was absolutely the right choice for us.”
It has taken a little over two years for Denmaur to double their 100,000 milestone, which was achieved in March 2022, demonstrating the growing importance of aligning sustainability messaging with print.
Doogan added, “The growth of our Carbon Balanced Paper sales is definitely a reaction to how the print industry is continuing to raise its sustainability profile; but it’s also reflective of how end-users increasingly want to reduce their impacts and promote the sustainability of their own printed media”.
Carbon balancing is seen as a complementary step for organisations with carbon reduction and net zero commitments. While there is rightly scrutiny on the benefits and value on balancing. Denmaur, an SBTi validated business, confidently uses WLT’s Carbon Balanced programme as part of its carbon action strategy – a policy of continuously reducing and offsetting its carbon footprint.
Paul Opie, Partnership Director for Carbon Co, said “The Carbon Balanced Paper and Print programme gives leading, environmentally focussed businesses in the print and paper industry an essential tool to deliver positive action today. Denmaur’s position and commitment to sustainability in the industry goes well beyond accounting for its own business impacts by providing publishers, brands and consumers with a way to meet their own sustainability objectives when using print media.”
Catherine Barnard, CEO, World Land Trust added, “The global climate is changing at an unprecedented rate due to human-created climate change. So we are delighted to see that Denmaur celebrate this milestone as part of their contribution to society’s transition to a low-carbon economy.”
