The Saica Group has confirmed it will invest more than €100m in a new factory for its corrugated packaging division, Saica Pack, which will be located in Sant Esteve Sesrovires (Barcelona).
The company plans to unify its current operations of Saica Pack El Prat and Saica Pack Barcelona in the new location, the Can Margarit industrial estate in the Barcelona municipality, where it already operates a finished product warehouse. The start of the works is expected this summer and the installation of the first machines by the end of 2024.
The new plant will allow Saica to service its customers in their growth and meet the changing needs of the market, as well as overcome the limitations of space and age of its current facilities. This investment also represents an important reinforcement of the Saica Group for its presence and long-term commitment with the main national packaging market and with its Catalan customers.
The company acquired the land in 2010 and actively participated in the promotion and development of the estate.
Miguel Arévalo, Managing Director, Saica Pack El Prat, explains, “It has not been easy to develop a plot of these dimensions, at this distance from Barcelona. It is the result of careful long-term planning, to be close to our customers and the main communication nodes.”
He adds, “It is an important day for Saica, because this market is important to us. The new factory will have the latest technology, which will combine flexo and offset print, and will have notable advances, the result of digitization for the service of our customers. Due to size and technology, the new plant will be a national and European benchmark in the sustainable packaging sector.”
The current facilities in Barcelona and El Prat will continue to operate until the new factory opens, to which they will gradually transfer their production, ensuring seamless continuity of service. The workers of both plants (almost 300 people) are being given the opportunity to transfer to the new site.
