How we shop, how we wrap those presents and how we dispose of the packaging make a huge impact at this time of year.
The numbers may vary, but at least 680,000 tonnes of plastic, cardboard and food waste is thrown away each year and Christmas waste is fifteen times higher than any other celebration.
The Global Recycling Foundation are urging everyone to shop carefully and wrap carefully. Avoid too much plastic, even choose carefully, because millions of pounds worth of unwanted gifts always find their way to landfill sites each year.
“This is the time of year when we should be celebrating together, but also help make the planet a happier place by taking great care to help support and promote recycling by carefully disposing of what you don’t want including packaging waste using the appropriate bins. Together we can make our planet greener, sustainable & safer for our children,” said Ranjit Baxi, founder, Global Recycling Foundation.
