Based in Istanbul, Turkey and well established as a leading producer of corrugated packaging, Kaan Oluklu Mukavva Sanayi Ticaret A.S. is a privately owned business. Considerable growth over the last few years has prompted the owner, Mustafa Koçan, to confirm the building of a new, greenfield corrugated packaging facility just outside of Istanbul, in the Asian territory. The facility, which will include 36,000 sqm of covered space, is being designed by the influential Turkish architects, Sigma.
At the heart of the new site will be a series of new machines from Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. Following several visits to customer installations in Japan with representatives of MHI and a solid working relationship that has been well established already, Mustafa Koçan and his team have now confirmed the order for a 2.5m complete line NGC corrugator. This line will feature 60N belted single facers with cassette system and the wet-end will be capable of running at 450 m/min, with paper splices running at 584 m/min. At the dry-end, the latest technology has been specified, including the 67N slitter scorer which is able to run gapless order changes at 400 m/min. It also has a waste removal system that runs at line speed of 400 m/min.
Latest Machine Development
In the converting department, Kaan has ordered one of the new MC100 flexo folder gluers, the newest casemaker from MHI. This four colour line will be fitter with the high performance MPF M pre-feeder, which will help ensure the line can run at maximum speed.
“The original order was placed by Kaan Oluklu Mukavva Sanayi Ticaret A.S. back in January 2020, just before the COVID-19 pandemic,” explains Giovanni Bettini, Sales Director, MHI EMEA. “Obviously, the pandemic caused a delay in the project, but Mustafa Koçan never lost faith in Mitsubishi or the overall project. We were naturally delighted when he gave us the final green light recently.”
Bettini continues, “This agreement for the supply of the latest generation of corrugator and converting machines is very important for MHI EMEA and our penetration into the Turkish market. We already have some existing machines in the market, but with this order, we will now be able to showcase the latest generation of corrugator and converting equipment in a completely new, state-of-the-art greenfield plant. We are delighted to be working with Mustafa Koçan and his team at Kaan, as we believe they will be looking to run our equipment at full speed and produce high output with excellent quality. We are delighted they have put their trust in Mitsubishi.”
Musta Koçan explains that at the beginning of their investment project, they had made a deep level of research for all the high performance machines. “At the early stages, we received solid replies of all of our technical questions, with the support of Ata Komral, General Manager of MHI-Turkey office and his entire team, as well as Giovanni Bettini,” he said. “We decided to take a step on this path with MHI, believing that it will maintain its efficiency in mechanical, technical and latest technological terms for many years. We are proud of making a new investment with the latest technology, which will result in one of the best equipped facilities in our country.”
